Earthways Community Nature School is
a great program for home-schoolers. It consists of
a full day of class each week with lessons based in
naturalist and wilderness skills. This class is
recommended for students wanting to delve
deeper into the lessons we teach.
Students have
time to explore, learn, and grow in the natural world
with trained mentors and peers. This program
contains focused lessons that include journaling,
games, play, storytelling, and hands-on experience.
Students practise our core routines, they learn
about the flora and fauna of this area, and they gain
experience in wilderness and primitive skills.
Community School students also enjoy rhythmic
music time, singing, quieting the mind activities,
land restoration projects, and time for artistic
expression.

Core Teaching Values:

Language of Compassion - Earthways mentors receive training in
communication based on Marshall Rosenberg's NVC or Language of
Compassion techniques. These techniques help us to listen with empathy
and communicate our observations, feelings, needs, and requests in ways
that are more likely to be received.

Secret Spot – all children participate in some form of this activity
regularly; this is the core of all our learning and is so important that
we require all mentors to have a regular secret spot routine outside
of school.

50-50 Principle – we always allow room in our lesson plan for
spontaneity and the exciting surprises of nature as well as the
inspirations of the children.

Hands on Experience – as much as possible children receive
direct hands on experience to learn from.

Coyote Teaching & The Art of Mentoring – These two
techniques are teaching techniques taught by world renowned
naturalist and mentor Jon Young. There is much complexity to
these programs and I cannot give an adequate description in a
short paragraph. These techniques are based in rich cultural
traditions from around the world and incorporate learning as a way
of life and a “culture” rather than something you do only at certain
times and in certain places. When done well the child may not even
realize a lesson was taught even though he/she will have gained
the wisdom and/or inspiration from it.

Parents enrolling their children will be encouraged to listen to a 90
min. cassette tape of Jon Young explaining these concepts.

Inspiration – We believe that fun and inspiration are necessary
ingredients to learning and strive to begin here with all lessons.
Classes run mid September
through mid June
Cost is $
165.00 per month
